ARK ROYAL

¨Big harmonies, swift picking, and great strings–this song hits you with a lot right up front. Gotta love a track that captures you from the get-go. Things get better from there, too.¨

Ailsa Tully

Ailsa Tully is a singer- songwriter and folk cellist currently studying popular music at Goldsmiths University. Ailsa uses the Cello in a new and unconventional way to accompany her voice and modal song writing style, drawing on influences from ‘The Incredible string band’ to ‘The Staves’ she combines folk stories with personal poetic imagery. 2014 saw the release of her debut music video ‘Martyr’ which also featured on her brand new EP; ‘The Charm of Human Error’. Following the success of these releases Ailsa was featured on BBC Wales Introducing’s best of year show and on Radio Warwickshire’s folk showcase.
‘I can’t tell you how excited I got when I heard this… inexplicable transcendental excellence’
– Adam Walton on ‘Feathered friend’ (BBC Introducing Wales)

James Paul Avery

James is a writer and performance poet. Influenced by the happenings of everyday life, but then crafted into rhythmic rhetoric which is impossible not to tune into. James was part of the team who developed and performed ‘They You Would Crew With’. A telling of  sea tales and folk lore with shanties and traditional folk music.

THE BAND

Ark Royal are a collection of three intelligent and attractive females along with three average looking males who convince themselves otherwise.   Born out of early solo work by Jon Kristian,  they consist of five parts Coastal England with one part Canadian wit.  They formed in mid-2015 with the aim of writing songs that embraced their rural upbringings, what resulted was a brand of indie-folk consisting of lyrical songwriting and boasting six part vocal arrangements.  “Think Matthew and the Atlas meets The Staves,” explain the Band. In a relatively short period of time, they have amassed a large repertoire of songs, choosing four to put on their Self-Titled EP was “a challenge at first, but we wanted the tracks to showcase the sound we made when we first started, where we we felt we had progressed to  at the time of recording and also where we felt we were heading,” explains Kristian.   Using Guitar, violins, piano, drums, ukulele and occasionally a Melodica for good measure, their live shows can be described as nearly always ending in majority of audience participating in a hoedown.  Ark Royal’s self-titled EP is available to buy and download now. Distributed by Spinnup it is available on Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, Rhapsody, TIDAL & Deezer.
